Stone Age Guide
Your first hours in TerraFirmaCraft. Learn knapping, fire-making, pottery, and pit kilns to survive and prepare for the metal ages.
Punching trees for wood
Pick up sticks from the ground or punch leaves
Making wooden tools
There are no wooden tools in TFC - use stone knapping
Wasting rocks on failed knapping
Practice the pattern mentally first, each attempt costs a rock
Placing pit kiln near wood structures
Fire spreads! Build 5+ blocks away from flammables
Forgetting to fire clay items
Unfired clay items break if used - always fire them first
Phase 1: First Minutes
Important: There are no wooden tools in TerraFirmaCraft. Don't waste time punching trees - it won't give you anything useful.
Gather from the ground:
- Loose Rocks - Found everywhere on the ground
- Sticks - Under trees, or punch leaves
- Twigs - Under trees
Tip: The type of rock affects tool durability. In order of durability: Sedimentary < Metamorphic < Igneous Intrusive < Igneous Extrusive
Phase 2: Knapping
Knapping is how you create stone tool heads. Hold 2+ rocks andRMB to open the 5x5 knapping grid. Click squares to remove stone and form the pattern.
Warning: Removed squares cannot be restored. One rock is consumed per attempt.
Stone Tools
Click 'Practice Pattern' to practice knapping before trying in-game
Stone Axe
Chop trees (~90% log drop rate)

Tool Head + Stick = Stone Axe
Stone Hammer
Crush flux, break logs into sticks

Tool Head + Stick = Stone Hammer
Stone Hoe
Till soil for farming

Tool Head + Stick = Stone Hoe
Stone Javelin
Ranged weapon, hunting

Tool Head + Stick = Stone Javelin
Stone Knife
Cut straw, harvest crops, butcher animals

Tool Head + Stick = Stone Knife
Stone Shovel
Dig dirt, clay, gravel, sand

Tool Head + Stick = Stone Shovel
Phase 3: Fire & Light
Firestarter Recipe
The first tool you need to create fire

Firestarter
Random chance to light fires, consumes durability per attempt
Usage Tips
- • Has a random chance to ignite (~50%)
- • Each attempt uses 1 durability
- • Use on firepit materials or pit kilns
- • Works in rain (unlike flint & steel)

Firepit
Drop (Q) items on the ground, then use firestarter:
3x
1x

Torches
Place sticks in a lit firepit's fuel slot:
1x
2xNote
Torches burn out after 48 hours (configurable) or when exposed to rain. Re-light them with a firestarter or another lit torch.
Phase 4: Finding Clay

Near Water
Look for brown/tan patches
Small clay deposits spawn near rivers, lakes, and ponds. The clay block looks similar to dirt but with a slightly different color. Dig with a shovel to collect clay items.

Indicator Plants
175mm+ rainfall areas
These plants indicate clay deposits below (dig down 1-3 blocks):
Clay Knapping
Shape clay into pottery items
Hold 5 clay and RMB to open the clay knapping interface. Unlike stone knapping, clay is forgiving:
- Cancel anytime without losing clay
- Try different patterns freely
- Clay only consumed on success
5x

Clay Knapping Patterns
Practice these patterns before knapping in-game. Clay is forgiving - you can cancel without losing materials!
Clay Jug
Carry & drink water

Clay Vessel
4-slot portable storage

Clay Large Vessel
9-slot storage block

Clay Bowl
Food preparation

Ingot Mold
Cast metal ingots

Phase 5: Pit Kiln - Making a Ceramic Jug
The ceramic jug is essential for carrying water. This example shows the full crafting chain.
Click nodes to expand/collapse. Green dots indicate raw materials.
Pit Kiln Construction

1. Place items (V)
Up to 4 unfired items

2. Add straw
8 straw or 2 thatch

3. Add logs & light
8 logs, then firestarter
Materials Needed
8x Straw
8x Logs
FirestarterImportant Notes
- !All sides except top must be solid blocks
- !Fire spreads - keep away from flammables
- ✓Rain won't put out pit kilns
- ✓Heats to 1400°C over ~8 in-game hours
Tool Molds (For Copper Age)
Prepare these molds now for when you reach the metal ages. Each requires 5 clay and must be fired.
Axe Mold
Cast copper/bronze axe heads

Pick Mold
Cast copper/bronze pickaxe heads

Shovel Mold
Cast copper/bronze shovel heads

Hoe Mold
Cast copper/bronze hoe heads

Knife Mold
Cast copper/bronze knife blades

Javelin Mold
Cast copper/bronze javelin heads

Hammer Mold
Cast copper/bronze hammer heads

Saw Mold

Sword Mold
Cast copper/bronze sword blades

Chisel Mold
Cast copper/bronze chisel heads

Mace Mold
Cast copper/bronze mace heads

Scythe Mold
Cast copper/bronze scythe blades

ProPick Mold

Tip: Make multiple ingot molds - you'll need them frequently for casting metal.
Pro Tips for Stone Age
- -Collect extra rocks of the same type - you'll need them for more tools
- -Make a stone hammer early - you need it for flux and crafting
- -Fire multiple ceramic vessels at once to save straw/logs
- -Always carry a ceramic jug - dehydration kills fast
